Why the U.S. Joined: Inside Operation Midnight Hammer

A Turning Point: The U.S. Enters the Israel–Iran War

On June 21, 2025, the United States officially entered the Israel–Iran conflict with a precision airstrike campaign codenamed Operation Midnight Hammer. U.S. B-2 stealth bombers, launched from Diego Garcia and carriers in the Gulf, struck key Iranian nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz, Isfahan, and Arak-escalating the conflict from a regional flashpoint to a full-scale international confrontation.

What Prompted U.S. Involvement

The Biden administration, initially urging restraint, shifted gears after:

1. Iranian Missiles Hit Israeli Civilians and Hospitals

  • A barrage of Iranian missiles—launched in retaliation for Israel’s June 13 strikes—targeted civilian areas in Haifa and Beersheba.
  • One missile struck Soroka Medical Center, injuring over 50 patients and staff.
  • Israeli intelligence confirmed the missiles were IRGC-launched, not from proxies.

The attack was labeled by Washington as a “deliberate war crime.”

“The use of ballistic missiles against hospitals crosses every line of humanity and warfare,” said the U.S. Secretary of State.

2. Fear of a Rapid Iranian Nuclear Breakout

Pentagon assessments concluded that Iran was days away from assembling a crude but functional nuclear weapon after enrichment hit 90% purity.
Israel’s initial strikes damaged, but did not fully neutralize, underground enrichment sites. The U.S. stepped in to finish the job, deploying advanced GBU-57 bunker-buster munitions.

“We acted to ensure the world’s most dangerous regime doesn’t get the world’s most dangerous weapon,” said the U.S. Defense Secretary.

3. Strategic Signaling to China, Russia, and North Korea

The U.S. intervention wasn’t just about Iran—it was a global message:

  • To China: Don’t mistake U.S. restraint over Taiwan for inaction elsewhere.
  • To Russia: U.S. still retains first-strike and precision dominance.
  • To North Korea: Any nuclear escalation will be preempted.

A senior U.S. official stated off-record:

“This was deterrence by example. We couldn’t afford another red line to dissolve.”

What Operation Midnight Hammer Targeted

Target Description Effect
Fordow Facility Deep underground enrichment bunker Breached via bunker-busters
Isfahan UAV Complex Drone assembly and launch systems Destroyed with precision airstrikes
IRGC Cyber Division HQ Site linked to U.S. base hacks Crippled communication
Airbases at Bandar Abbas Launchpads for missile strikes on Israel Rendered inoperable

All strikes were conducted without civilian casualties, according to Pentagon briefings.

Reactions to U.S. Entry

  • Israel: Welcomed the strikes; “the alliance has never been stronger.”
  • Iran: Called it an act of war; vowed retaliation “beyond imagination.”
  • Russia & China: Accused U.S. of imperial aggression.
  • UN Security Council: Convened emergency session; no resolution passed.
  • Markets: Oil spiked past $110/barrel; Asian equities dropped sharply.

Legal and Strategic Basis

The U.S. cited:

  • Article 51 of the UN Charter (self-defense in collective alliance)
  • Intelligence showing Iran’s imminent nuclear threat and regional destabilization
  • Israel’s formal request for defense coordination under the 2001 U.S.–Israel Defense Understanding

This marks the first U.S. combat operation against Iran on Iranian soil, excluding cyberattacks and covert actions.

A New Chapter in Middle East Warfare

Operation Midnight Hammer represents a military, diplomatic, and doctrinal pivot:

  • The shadow war between Iran and the West has gone overt.
  • The U.S. is no longer a cautious referee—it’s an active combatant.
  • What follows depends on how Tehran retaliates, and whether the region braces for an even larger, multi-front war.
